Review: 2014 MotoGP Season Review

It was the year, again, of Marc Marquez, not forgetting his kid brother Alex and as you would expect their title triumphs are well recorded in this eleventh edition of the Official MotoGP Season Review 2014 which hit the shelves little more than a couple of weeks after the flag fell on the final race of the year.

That in itself is some achievement, more so given the lavish photography by Andrew Northcott and the detailed, incisive reporting we have all come to expect from TV commentator Julian Ryder, together with the “techy bits” from Nigel Spalding and a though provoking lead article by the respected Mat Oxley.

Every round of MotoGP is fully covered over eight pages, with full graphics giving everything from qualifying lap times to full race results, lap charts, rider assessments, reasons for non-finishes and pictures that capture the telling moments.  It is the full, blow by blow, account of the season as it unfolded across a long campaign of 18 races, of which all but five were won by Marc Marquez who continued to re-write the sport’s record books.

The bikes are analysed, the subtle differences about the Repsol Hondas for Marquez and Dani Pedrosa, the changes made during the season, technical detail but in a readable form for the enthusiast in the know and also the casual observer.  And the riders come under the spotlight – the weakness for Marquez: “he is not the best starter” though as the author points out “that does not seem to matter.”

The riders also have their say, deciding who is their rider of the year – no secret that the top three came out in the same order as they finished in the World Championship though Rossi was much closer to Marquez than in the final title standings.

Flicking through the pages the reader can discover how Rossi, the nine times World Champion no less, turned around his fortunes by watching the style of Marquez, who had been the boyhood hero of the legendary Italian.  Find out where Rossi was too fast for even Marquez to stay with him, and what happened to the young Spaniard.  For the pub-quiz, where did Marquez score his first ever MotoGP flag to flag victory, and who are Team Rufea?  The answers are in this splendid publication.

Either put this Official MotoGP Season Review 2014, published by Evro and endorsed by Dorna, on your Christmas list, but if you cannot wait that long, take a trip to the shops now, it is £30 well spent. A readable documentary of a memorable season in which two brothers each won a world title.
