Britain's Kevin Coghlan bagged the CEV Spanish Supersport Championship at Jerez last weekend in only his second year in the series after title rival Ivan Moreno had to retire with a blown engine.

The young Scotsman, riding for the Joe Darcey Honda team, finished the race in fourth after seeing Moreno retire and deciding to ride around for the points, although he still had a few moments on track.

"I didn't get a great start and ended up going into the first turn in fourth place. My plan was to take it steady for the first couple of laps while keeping an eye on Moreno and staying out of trouble," said Coghlan.

"When I saw Moreno's engine blow up I couldn't believe it, I thought the Championship is over so just decided to ride steady for the points. During the race I had some pretty scary moments dicing with Hernandez when he made a few "close" moves but I suppose that's racing.

"It would have been nice to get on the podium but it wasn't to be and finishing fourth was enough to clinch the title which is what it's all been about. I'm very happy with that.

"I'm looking forward to Valencia as there's less pressure now the Championships mine and I can have a bit more free reign to do what I want. Saying that I'll still be riding for the win. At the moment my plans for next year are to stay with Joe Darcey in Moto2 but I'm still open to offers."
