2015 Sheene Festival: Race weekend preview

There are few better ways to celebrate one of Britain’s most treasured motorcycle racers than to have a festival of racing in his name and that is exactly how the Auto66 club at Oliver’s Mount are planning to remember Barry Sheene this weekend.

Oliver’s Mount road race circuit is England’s only natural ‘road’ racetrack. Situated just five minutes from Scarborough’s town centre, the races have been likened to a ‘miniature TT by the seaside’. Edge of your seat racing, the closest action seen at any race venue, friendly locals and a stunning setting are all key features of a race weekend at ‘The Mount’.

The 2.43mile track has always been regarded as a challenging circuit, which tests riders’ skills to the maximum. With a racing heritage that dates back to 1946, the circuit has a rich history and has seen many of the greats at ‘The Mount’ over the years.

It is such a history at the track which enticed Suzuki to sponsor the event, and with the Japanese marque being almost synonymous with Barry Sheene and his success in the 1970s the deal was a match made in heaven.

‘We’re really looking forward to being involved this year,” said Tim Davies, Aftersales Marketing Co-ordinator at Suzuki GB. “The guys do a fantastic job, and the opportunity to be involved in the Festival is obviously something that we couldn’t pass up.

“Barry spent most of his racing career with Suzuki and is an icon not only for us, but also for British motorcycling in general. We’re looking forward to getting the show underway.”

A host of things will be happening during the festival, including races and hill climbs, while riders including TT stars Lee Johnston and Lightweight TT winner Ivan Lintin are due to appear in what should be a fine two days of motorcycling.

Johnston took third in the Superstock TT recently and his appearance at the festival will give those heading to the Scarborough circuit a real treat, as will Lintin’s presence. Other possible names that have been mentioned include Dean Harrison Oliver’s Mount favourite Guy Martin but it remains to be seen whether he will be in attendance.

Incidentally, having signed for the R & C Express team at the beginning of 2015, Lintin made a successful racing debut with the team at the Spring Cup meeting in April taking a double victory at Oliver’s Mount, so his return will surely be a happy one for both him and the fans this weekend.

Racing legend and six-time World Champion Jim Redman will be in attendance alongside other racing legends including Mick Grant and Chris Palmer. There will be a chat show held on the Saturday and the Sunday with Jim Redman, Mick Grant and Chris Palmer where fans of all ages have the opportunity to meet the prestigious riders.

The Barry Sheene Festival Powered by Suzuki takes place this weekend, Saturday and Sunday the 20th & 21st June. Full details are available on the website: www.oliversmountracing.com or by phoning the Circuit Office on 01723 373000.
