2015 Ulster GP: Johnston does Supersport win double

Lee Johnston won his third race of the day at the Ulster Grand Prix when he took the second Supersport race from Glenn Irwin and Ian Hutchinson although the race was stopped on the fifth lap when rain began to fall.

No less than seven riders were involved in the battle for the win with Johnston, Irwin, Harrison, Ian Hutchinson, William Dunlop, Peter Hickman and Bruce Anstey nose to tail throughout.

It was Irwin who was leading at the time of the red flag but he was already gesticulating that he thought the race should be stopped as the rain got heavier. The race continued for a while but many of the front runners eased their pace although Irwin and Dunlop were still racing at the head of the field.

However, the red flag meant the result was taken at the end of lap three with the podium reading Johnston, Irwin and Hutchinson.

It was Irwin who led off the line but the first lap alone saw four changes in the lead as Johnston, Dunlop and Irwin again all took their turns at the front. At the end of the lap the order was Irwin, Dunlop, Johnston, Hutchinson, Anstey, Keith Amor and Harrison.

Three abreast along the Flying Kilo, Johnston led for much of the lap until Irwin dived up the inside at the hairpin and he started the third lap in the lead once more from Johnston, Dunlop and Hutchinson.

Hutchinson moved up to third on lap three and this became second on lap four as the front four of Johnston, Irwin, Hutchinson and Harrison began to break away from Dunlop, Hickman and Anstey.

The rain spots were beginning to get heavier though and as Irwin headed towards Deers Leap on the fifth lap he took his hand off the bars and looked behind to see a few of the other leading runners easing off. The race continued for a further half lap and it saw Dunlop leap up to second as Johnston, Harrison and Hutchinson all backed off.

However, the red flag was soon out and so Johnston duly took his hat-trick from Irwin, Hutchinson and Harrison. Dunlop, Anstey and Hickman took fifth, sixth and seventh with Conor Cummins, Amor and Robert Kennedy completing the top ten.
