2016 PI Classic: Cummins ‘dialing out problems’ ahead of qualifying

Roads star Conor Cummins spent practice for the 2016 Phillip Island Classic and is now ready for qualifying tomorrow despite losing a session to rain.

The Manxman made his debut at the Australian circuit last year and says he can’t wait to get into competition again on what is one of the best circuits in the world;

“Yesterday we had a few problems in the practice. Really that is what practice is all about to iron out all the little issues, because these bikes have been shipped halfway around the world. Don [Carcas] has been working his arse to get my bike sorted. We have got the problems dialled out ready for qualifying tomorrow,” said Cummins, speaking to bikesportnews.com at the track.

“In regards to the track, obviously last year was my first time here at Phillip Island. Before I came here I was watching loads of you tube footages to try and work out the track. However, video clips really didn’t do the track justice. When I got onto the track and rode it for the first time just blew me away!

“It’s a fantastic circuit to ride on. You’re charging down to turn one and your thinking - right, later the better on the brakes is better. Every lap you’re getting braver and braver and start taking deeper breaths. That’s the nature of the course really. You have to be really switched on and get your lines bang on as well. Phillip Island is a thinking man’s track as well. It really is a great pleasure to be here.

“I have to say a massive thank to Team Winfield and all of the sponsors and of course all of the lads and lasses who pull together to make this all possible. End of the day we have come half way around the world which is a massive effort to pull this off. To be able to come out to Australia and race a bike around one of the best circuits in the world is pretty special, so I consider myself very lucky to be here. I can’t wait to go racing tomorrow and Sunday.”
