2016 PI Classic: McWilliams ‘struggling’ with new chassis

Ultra-competitive ex-MotoGP star Jeremy McWilliams says he is struggling to get a comfortable setup with a new chassis at the 2016 Phillip Island Classic and heavy rain at the Australian track has robbed him of vital track time.

The Irishman is currently behind team-mates Ryan Farquhar and Glen Richards (whose mum was born in Manchester before you get your ptichforks out) in terms of lap times and says he will need to do some fast work in morning warm-up to get on the pace.

Or the wily old devil is sandbagging…

“I kind of struggled a bit yesterday getting up to speed, but I always do. You don’t just come to what is one of the fastest circuits on the calendar and click back into it. It does take a while. I was also setting up a new chassis and just didn’t really gel with it. I could have done with more practice today,” he said, speaking to bikesportnews.com.

“I could have done with qualifying. Any more time on track would have been great. Unfortunately it hasn’t worked out that way. We’ll go into tomorrow with a fifteen minute session and some of us will be up against it, particularly new riders like James Hiller and Conor, which is his second time here, also John.

“Ryan and Glen were going well yesterday and I was sort of in the middle there somewhere. So it’s going to take a little bit of time and even until the first race before I find my way. This will probably play into the Aussies hands a little bit because of the riders were pretty much up to speed straight away.”
