2017 KTM Super Duke 1290 R unveiled

If we had to make a list of the bikes which needed more power, aggression and tech, it would be a long, long list. But to be fair – KTM’s current Super Duke 1290 R wouldn’t be bothering the top ten. Or the top 50 probably… The Austrian hyper-naked mega-nutter matched an improbably strong V-twin lump with a smartly competent chassis, added on some bonkers styling, and even came with all the electronic aids anyone could ask for.

We’re not complaining about this 2017 update mind. KTM’s gone in elbows-deep here, with a freshly-revised 177bhp motor, lashings more electronic riding hacks, and new suspension. You also get even harder bodywork, with full LED lighting and a keyless ignition system.

To the motor first (because it’s always my favourite part). The compression is up to an almost Diesel-ish 13.6:1, which points to some very cunning combustion chamber design, and ultra-smart electronics. Keeping that C.R. in a road bike without serious detonation is some achievement. The intake valves are new titanium chaps, and resonator chambers and shorter intake stubs further optimise the cold side of the gas flow equation.

On the electronics front, there’s a new TFT dash, and a couple of optional riding aids packs. The Performance Pack has traction, quickshifter and the My Ride smartphone integration setup. Alternatively, you can go for the Track Pack, which has power modes, full wheelie control and launch control. Woo! All versions have the Bosch leaning ABS and leaning traction control, which uses a smart IMU (inertial measurement unit) to work out the bike’s attitude (usually bad haha) in space, and control the engine and brake outputs accordingly.

KTM’s stuck with its tried and true trellis frame, but has swapped out the WP suspension units. The front forks are now monstrous 48mm stanchioned chappies, with separate damping functions in each leg. Out back is a new monoshock with a stronger spring, operated by the sweet single-sided swingarm.

With updates to BMW’s S1000R, the new Ducati Monster 1200R and Kawasaki launching a new Z1000R, the supernaked class is looking hotter than ever. Judging by spec alone though, the future could very well be orange in that sector…
