PBM Ducati’s Glenn Irwin went six-tenths under Stuart Easton’s seven-year-old Macau Grand Prix lap record on his way to pole postion for Saturday race, beating two-time winner Peter Hickman by a massive 1.8s.

Irwin left pitlane on his BSB-spec Panigale with 11 minutes left to run - and Derek Sheils in tow - and after a slowish bedding in lap to get some track space, blasted to a 2’23.081 to open a huge gap over the SMT/Bathams rider whose final run finished with a 2’24.891.

Multiple winner and race veteran Michael Rutter bagged third place with his final effort, putting in a 2’24.973 to hold off a charge from the Padgetts Honda of Conor Cummins, whose last lap of 2'25.555 put him in fifth.

Martin Jessopp found some pace to finish in fifth on the Riders BMW while David Johnson launched himself into sixth place with a 2’26.468. Lee Johnston was another big improver, and will start from seventh place with Horst Saiger in eighth. Sheils’ tow from Irwin was enough to bag ninth place. Gary Johnson completed the top ten.
