2018 Le Mans 24-Hour: Laverty, Iddon, Webb on the podium

Bennetts British Superbike stars Michael Laverty and Christian Iddon were ably assisted by former Moto3 star Danny Webb to the Le Mans 24-Hour podium this afternoon despite early and late crashes from the Wepol Penz13.com BMW team.

After 840 laps the squad crossed the line just three laps behind the winners of FCC TSR Honda and two laps behind #111 Honda in second place.

There was drama during whole race and it didn't pass the team by. On his first stint, Laverty had a little spill in the Dunlop chicane but was able to lift the bike and finish his run.

At the planned pit stop, the damaged foot peg was replaced. Iddon took over but as a result of the crash the handle bar broke under braking so he was forced to come back in to the pits.

After that the race would go according to plan until midnight, when Webb had a similar crash to Laverty in the beginning. Webb dislocated his shoulder was also able to continue and finish his stint. Lunatic.

"First of all I am sorry for my crash in my first stint but I tried as hard as I could on course of the race to make up my mistake. I was lucky the bike didn't get too damaged so I could continue and finish my stint. Considering we had all but not a problem free race, this podium tastes even sweeter. I am happy we made it through in first line, but to stand up there here in Le Mans is a special feeling," said Laverty.

"We had some issues and problems, which made it harder for us all , especially when I did head out for my first stint and the handle bar broke after Michael's crash. I am really happy and surprised what professional job the team did and even more I am happy we could bring it home on the podium," added Iddon.

Webb said: "I am over the moon. It was my second 24 hours race and we made it to the podium two times in two races. Not too bad for an Endurance rookie. I am sorry I had this little spill of during my night stint, but it didn't cost us too much. I am more than happy we are on the podium again."
