2018 Ulster GP: Harrison wins red-flagged Superstock clash

Dean Harrison set a new class lap record to win a shortened Superstock race at the Ulster Grand Prix on Saturday with the result being declared with four of the six laps being completed.

Harrison crossed the line at the end of lap four 0.203s ahead of Peter Hickman and although the latter went into the lead along the Flying Kilo, the red flag came out shortly afterwards due to an incident at Joey’s Windmill.

“It’s a shame the race was stopped early as it was shaping up to be a great battle but safety comes first,” said Harrison afterwards. “The race was going really well and the bikes were evenly matched so it was nip and tuck all the way as we both took turns in the lead. The lap record shows the pace we were going.”

Harrison took the lead off the line before Hickman went ahead and it was the Smiths Racing BMW rider who led at the end of the opening lap, his lead over Harrison 0.4s as Davey Todd, David Johnson, Conor Cummins and Lee Johnston completed the top six.

Second time around and Hickman lapped at 133.805mph to maintain his lead although Harrison lapped slightly quicker on the Silicone Engineering Kawasaki at 133.835mph to set a new lap record. Todd was still in third as Cummins and Johnston relegated Johnson to sixth.

Lap three saw Harrison take the lead but it was still close and at the end of the lap, there was still only 0.1s between them. Cummins was now up to third, four seconds adrift, with Todd down to fourth but still ahead of Johnston and Johnson, the latter dropping back slightly on the Tyco BMW.

Hickman closed right back up to the wheel of Harrison on lap four and as they went down the Flying Kilo at the start of lap five, he pulled out of the slipstream to take the lead. Paul Jordan had moved ahead of Johnson to take sixth whilst Adam McLean pulled in to the pits when lying in eighth.

However, the red flag came out soon afterwards with the result declared at the end of the fourth lap which meant Harrison took the win from Hickman with Cummins completing the podium in third.

Todd, who lapped at close to 133mph, was placed fourth ahead of Johnston and Jordan, the latter also setting a new personal best lap of 131.148mph on the Dafabet Devitt Racing Kawasaki.

Johnson took seventh ahead of Dominic Herbertson, Dan Cooper and Ryan Kneen.
