Brands BSB: Currie's Supersport win breaks dry spell

Gearlink Kawasaki’s Ben Currie held off David Allingham in this afternoon’s red-flagged Dickies British Supersport race to edge ever closer to the series lead.

Although Allingham looked like he may have had a go at the lead in the closing moments, a handful of incidents on track brought an early end to action with two laps remaining in today’s 12-lap sprint race, allowing the points runner-up to take his first victory since Round One at Donington Park when he did the double.

EHA Racing’s Allingham grabbed the holeshot ahead of team-mate Ross Twyman as pole-sitter Currie dropped to third, but it wasn’t long before the Australian levered Twyman aside to take second as he continued to draft past Allingham on the Brabham straight to lead at the end of the first lap.

Currie and Allingham began stretching an advantage over Twyman, but Northern Irishman Allingham wasn’t about to let Currie run away like he and Jack Kennedy have nearly all season so far.

The two front-men set the pace with the time between them hovering at a few tenths of a second, and despite setting the fastest lap of the race at 1’28.409s, it looked like Allingham wouldn’t be able to bridge the gap.

But on the penultimate lap, he had cut Currie’s lead to just 0.122s and began to look for a way past the German-born Australian.

Allingham’s hopes were dashed, however, when red flags came out for a number of incidents on track including the GP2 machines of Jorel Boerboom and Mike Brouwers.

Currie bagged his third win of the year 0.189s clear of Allingham and his team-mate Twyman, the latter of whom was just over two seconds off the top step.
