Smiths Triumph’s Billy McConnell secured his second Motorpoint British Supersport victory of the year fending off team-mate Glen Richards to clinch it.
Pole setter Christian Iddon took the hole shot with Richards and Championship leader Jack Kennedy behind him. On the exit of the last corner Kennedy went sideways losing his drive down the start-finish line dropping him back to sixth after lap one.
Richards then made his move on Iddon as he went past on the brakes into the hairpin and it took just two laps before McConnell went past Iddon too. On lap six Mar-Train Yamaha's Kennedy began to push through the pack as he moved up to fourth, going past Sam Warren and Luke Mossey.
A lap later Warren had a huge high-side resulting in the Safety Car being brought out and Richards’ lead shrinking. As the Safety Car came in, Richards pulled the pin opening out a half a second advantage over McConnell and Iddon.
McConnell then upped his pace, setting a fastest lap of the race in doing so, and moved past Richards to take the lead. Iddon then posted a new lap record and tagged on to the back of the two Smiths Triumph riders, making it a three way battle for the lead.
With 9 laps to go Iddon suffered technical difficulties causing him to pull out of the race leaving it to the two Melbourne riders. With 8 to go Richards pushed in front of McConnell on the brakes into the hairpin but he didn’t hold on to the lead for long with McConnell going back ahead with six laps left and he didn’t look back, taking the win by 0.3 of a second.
Kennedy clinched third, his seventh consecutive podium finish, but his Championship lead was reduced to 18.5 points by Richards. Gearlink Kawasaki’s Ben Wilson recovered from issues in yesterday’s Sprint Race to take fourth with Luke Mossey holding off Richard Cooper to take fifth.
Pauli Pekkanen was seventh with Luke Jones, taking his second Cup victory of the weekend, behind him in eighth. Appleyard Macadam Yamaha’s Deane Brown was ninth and he was closely followed by Gearlink new boy Dan Cooper.
