Dani Pedrosa and Ben Spies have blitzed the MotoGP pack during the second Indianapolis MotoGP free practice session with the Spaniard nearly three quarters of a second faster than championship leader Jorge Lorenzo who finished behind his factory Yamaha team-mate.
At the mid-point, Pedrosa had a second lead over the field with a 1'39.882 but Spies, who was on pole here last year, pegged him back with a 1'40.078 only for the diminutive Repsol Honda man to up the pace again with a session-topping 1'39.783.
Lorenzo's penultimate lap was enough to reduce the gap to seven-tenths in the final analysis with Yamaha stable-mate Andrea Dovizioso grabbing fourth with his last lap of 1'40.560.
Reigning champion Casey Stoner had rear suspension problems with technicians jumping up and down on the the bike in an un-HRC style and the Australian swapped to his second bike with six minutes left and pulled off a 1'40.623 to bag fifth place.
Britain's Cal Crutchlow shook off his first-session crash to take sixth-fastest but is the best part of 1.3s off the pace while Alvaro Bautista, who is fighting for his job at Gresini Hondam one place behind in seventh.
Stefan Bradl continued his form from this morning, staying ahead of the works Ducatis. Nicky Hayden is 1.6s off the pace in ninth with departing team-mate Valentino Rossi tenth.
Randy De Punet cured whatever was ailing him earlier to bag CRT top spot and 11th overall with Mattia Pasini and Aleix Espargaro in his wake. Colin Edwards was 18th and James Ellison 20th.
Toni Elias has replaced Hector Barbera on the Pramac Ducati. Barbera crashed heavily this morning on his return from injury and has been taken to hospital with back injuries.
