MotoGP Sepang test: Marquez breaks two-minute barrier

Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez has again set the fastest time on day two of MotoGP testing at Sepang but has also broken his own outright lap record and gone under the 2'00 lap marker with a 1'59.926 but he is still more than a third of a second slower than Casey Stoner's time of 1'59.607 set in 2012.

Marquez' team-mate Dani Pedrosa put his RCV213V in second place with a 2'00.336 with LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl completing the HRC clean sweep on a 2'00.339. Valentino Rossi managed to find three-tenths overnight but slips down to fourth place with his 2'00.538.

Aleix Espargaro has shown the potential of the Open class runners, sticking his factory Yamaha-powered FTR Forward Racing machine into fifth place, lapping in 2'00.547 and ahead of Jorge Lorenzo on the second works Yamaha. Lorenzo has been worried about handling issues brought about by changed characteristics in power delivery due to increased fuel consumption which are playing havoc with his corner-speed reliant riding style.

Britain's Bradley Smith pushed his way into seventh place with a 2'00.603 on the satellite Monster Yamaha, just 0.030 behind Lorenzo, while Andrea Iannone was the fastest of the Factory-spec Ducatis in eighth place. Alvaro Bautista and Pol Espargaro rounded out a top ten that is covered by a little over a second.

It was encouraging news for Cal Crutchlow who finished two-tenths behind team-mate Andrea Dovizioso in 12th and 1.4s off the pace but he found 1.3s on day two so is heading in the right direction.

Nicky Hayden was 14th and still two seconds slower than Aleix Espargaro but ahead of fellow American Colin Edwards on the second FTR Yamaha. Scott Redding remained in 21st place but found more than a second while Michael Laverty put in a 2'03.528 on his 39th of 41 laps, three tenths faster than his best from last year.

As ever, the true pace is difficult to gauge as fuel loads remain highly secretive. However, more clues may be available on Thursday as a selection of riders aim for race simulations and such long-run pace often serves as a better indicator.
