Nurburgring WSBK: Lowes sets provisional Supersport pole

Yakhnich Yamaha’s Sam Lowes was on form once again out on the German track for the first World Supersport qualifying practice session. The rider clocked his fastest time of 1’59.448 after eight minutes, but moments later improved on his time by nearly half a second to secure his place on provisional pole.

MAHI Racing’s Kenan Sofuoglu was one of the first riders out on track and stormed to the top of the timing sheets with a 2’00.746, but Lowes managed to out pace the current champ and rival by one tenth of a second. The Turkish racer was able to improve but his best lap of 1’59.107 only placed him on a provisional front row.

Sofuoglu’s team-mate Fabien Foret put in a last lap dash that placed him third fastest, with Yakhnich Yamaha’s Vladimir Leonov following suit, but his final lap was not quick enough to place him third and was two tenths of a second slower than Foret’s best lap of 1’59.433.

Even though he crashed out on his last lap, and was unhurt Pata Honda’s Lorenzo Zanetti was fifth fastest, followed by Rivamoto’s Jack Kennedy and DMC-Lorenzini rider Kev Coghlan.

The two youngsters had a solid qualifying practice session. Scottish lad, Coghlan was as high as third on the timesheets with Kennedy waiting till the final minutes to find his race pace and shot up from tenth to eighth. Then the Dubliner went one better to go sixth with a 1’59.748, demoting the Perthshire rider to seventh. In the end only four hundredths of a second separated the two lads.

Fellow Brit, ParkinGO Christian Iddon started off the qualifying practice session strongly and was on course for a provisional front row start after ten minutes out on the Nurburgring circuit.

But the Stockport rider fell back down the standings, but with two minutes to go out paced Pata Honda’s Michael Van der Mark and Kawasaki Intermoto’s David Salom to round off the top ten. Former Moto3 rider, now PTR Honda's World Supersport rookie, Danny Webb ended the afternoon 31st fastest.
