Aberdare Park: Weekend race report and results

The Aberdare Park Motorcycle Road Races shared typical Welsh weather, blazing sunshine on day one replaced by leaden skies and torrential rain for the Sunday, the slippery conditions bringing out many a red flag, though fortunately without injuries to riders.

Welsh Open winner in 2013 and 2014 Dan Cooper took a further win in the Welsh stakes, the Stroud rider impressive in both wet and dry conditions, his two wins giving him the overall victory on his Ruby Racing Triumph 675, plus a new lap record in the Park Challenge, Mark Goodings ZX6 in second spot from Ryan Dixon’s R6.

First win of the meeting went to Roy Marczuk, his 350 Yamaha getting by early leader Arthur Brownings rumbling Seeley 500 in the GT Superbikes Classic, with the first Supermoto race dominated by Ryan Dixon, his foot out winning style also reflected on his road race R6 as he took an impressive win in the very wet Park Challenge on Sunday, from Dan Cooper’s 675 Triumph, the race red flagged mid distance as Jay Bellers Smith slid off the ‘Esses’, the local rider having a dramatic race week-end, but rounding off the two days with an impressive win in the very last race on Sunday on his Smith Brothers, GP1 Lung development bike.

Cumbria rider Alistair Howarth enjoyed good results , repaying the long trip, his Knox Brookside Garage Yamaha FZR 400 having a dominant win in the Saturday Golden Era race, almost six seconds ahead of Mick Goodings Kawasaki, and taking another dry win in the 125-400 battle again from Gooding, plus another Golden Era wet Sunday win from Mick.

The ‘50’s were again popular as they buzzed around the .9 mile circuit, Dutch rider Rolend Wobben taking his WRE to a debut win, Spondon rider Darren Eaton taking pole but late out, starting from the back of the grid on his Derbi, but charging through for third place. Wins came for Ryan Dixons R6 in heat 1 of the Welsh Open, North Walian Paul Owen on his Honda RS250 taking several after race battles with Haworth, victorious in both wet and dry races, as Browning also proved that he and his Seeley 500 had winning capabilities.

The meeting also featured appearances by Isle of Man ‘TT’ ace and Honda factory rider Tommy Robb, and twenty three time ‘TT’ winner John McGuinness, the ‘Morecambe Missile’ riding the ex Paul Bird Motorsport Moto GP Aprilia 1000 machine of James Ellison, from the prestigious PMR Motorcycle Collection. The rain decimated spectator attendance on Sunday, poor reward for Aberamman MCC’s effort, and as the racing ended, out came the sun.
