Aintree round four: Weekend race report and results

Some championships were won and lost at the penultimate round of the Ace of Aintree at the Merseyside Circuit.

Sam Walker needs a miracle to retain the Powerbike and Superbike championships after parting company from his Honda coming out of Club Corner in the Powerbike points race. The rider was OK but the bike did not fair the same and his day was done while Christian Peck won the F400 race by a country mile and the championship.

Josh Daley on a 600 beat Jamie Coward while Greg Lewis crossed the line third but was the best of the Golden Era class.

Lewis had a mixed day but did win a close battle with his long time sparring partner Mike Walker in the Pre- Injection class but only by a fifth of a second. Walker put up the fastest lap in the battle but Lewis took the championship.

Lewis’ good run came to an end in the Superbike final when it was reported he was stopped on the side of the circuit.

Daley went on to win the Superbikes from Rob Hodson who was recovering from a broken collar bone and broken ribs following his spill at the last meeting.

Daley was lapping two mph faster than Hodson and three mph faster than Stuart Hall on a 1000 Suzuki.
Daley did however make a big mistake in the F600 qualifier. He celebrated his win with a forbidden wheelie only to be a lap too early and deemed not to have finished the race.

Starting from the back of the grid in the points race, he worked his way through until he came to Rob Hodson. Daley did overtake Hodson to take the lead but Hodson was not content to lie down and pipped Daley to the finish line by four hundredths of a second.

Hodson’s father Jim had to stand on the sidelines having had his leathers, boots and helmet purloined by his son who had his own leathers cut up the previous meeting in the spill.

Rob Varey who was riding his heart out with a standard road engine in his Yamaha came third.

Dave Edwards had put his race engine in his 250 Yam and was going to nurse it in for the Manx. He still beat the young pretender Loris Hunt to the flag in the 250 classic. Along with Mick Crompton and Keith Dixon, their respective championships are won.

Sidecars had Dave Molyneax and Ben Binns in the line- up and the pair won the first and third races. Robert Biggs and Mick Fairhurst were the victors overall on their 1000 LCR.
