Aragon WSBK test: Rea takes new ZX-10RR to top of timesheets

Double World Superbike Champion Jonathan Rea overcame myriad difficulties with the new Kawasaki ZX-10RR and topped the Aragon WorldSBK test timesheets today, going under the existing lap record by half a second with a 1’49.8s lap with team-mate Tom Sykes six-tenths further back.

Rea struggled with technical issues with the new bike yesterday but crew chief Pere Riba got them under control overnight and the Castletown resident was able to settle into his rhythm today and work on chassis setup. Sykes, meanwhile, set to work on race runs using the harder-option Pirelli and set a best of 1’50.4.

Aruba Ducati’s Chaz Davies put in the same laptime as Sykes and worked on short runs while the returning Marco Melandri continued to get used to the Panigale, setting a 1’50.8s laptime. Honda’s Nicky Hayden was also in that ballpark, working on chassis settings.

Stefan Bradl was the first rider to exit pit lane as he continued to find a strong setup on the Fireblade. Setting a time of 1’51.1 on the final day at a track on which he has produced some strong top five finishes at in the past, the German maintained his strong understanding of his new bike and tyres as he adjusted to the Pirelli tyres. Ending the test with a race simulation under his belt, Bradl and his team leave Aragon happy with the progress made.

Pata Yamaha new boy Michael van der Mark suffered a crash at turn three in the final hour of the day, which he was able to walk away from. Showing good consistency on a new bike, the Dutchman will be looking ahead to next week’s Jerez test to build on setup, setting his fastest time of 1’51.6.

On the other side of the garage, Alex Lowes was able to complete his testing schedule whilst clocking a time of 1’51.3. Working on swingarms as well as chassis, the British rider provided interesting results for the team after a long day at the Spanish track.
