Assen BSB: Archer romps to maiden Moto3 race glory

Jake Archer romped to a clear-cut victory, his first of the season, in the HEL Performance British Motostar Moto3GP Championship as he crossed the line a massive 12.689 seconds clear of Saturday’s race winner Dani Saez.

Jorel Boerboom cheered the locals as he started from pole but not for long as he was outgunned by Saez, a rider in a hurry to stake his claim for a winning Dutch double, who charged into the lead just ahead of Jake Archer.  Tom Booth-Amos running fourth though that was to change by the end of the lap as he moved third as Boerboom was relegated back to fourth.

Saez had the lead but Archer was harassing him all of the way and it was no surprise that he nosed ahead of the Spaniard on the second lap. Ed Rendell was riding hard, carving through into third, ahead of Booth-Amos and Boerboom.  But charging through the chicane places were traded with Booth-Amos third and Rendell back in fifth ahead of Richard Kerr and Brian Slooten.

Archer had the bit between his teeth and was forging clear, gapping Saez at the front by 2.510secs after four laps, and powering further ahead to be six seconds clear at half distance with Booth-Amos a distant third, holding on to it by a whisker from Boerboom and Rendell who were soon trading places in the scrap for the final podium place.

Slooten upped the tempo and attacked Rendell to grab fifth place and then turned his attention to Boerboom closing him down, but then being taken by Rendell as they swapped places several times on the eighth lap. Archer was not letting up, running nine seconds ahead of Saez, at three quarters distance, while a further five seconds back Boerboom was up to third, ahead of Rendell and Booth-Amos.

The four rider scrap for third place was fast and frantic. Boerboom had the edge going into the final lap but Booth-Amos took him, only to lose out and through the chicane Rendell made a last charge, grabbing fourth from Booth-Amos as Boerboom held on, somehow to third.

Out front Archer underlined his second place in the standings, to the absent Champion Charlie Nesbitt, as he took the victory by 12.689secs, from Saez.

In the HEL Performance Motostar Moto3 standard race Dan Jones showed championship style as he romped to victory, crossing the line over six seconds clear of the rest, as Victor Rodriguez took a distant second.

Jones was quickly away from pole but Thomas Strudwick grabbed the lead only to slip off, losing the front end into turn five, and at the end of the first lap it was Jones heading the pack by a second from Victor Rodriguez, TJ Toms and Storm Stacey.  Saturday’s race winner, Charlie Atkins, had a fight on his hands to repeat that maiden success as he started from the back of the pack, and was running ninth after two laps.

Jones meanwhile was dictating terms, forging clear at the front, and he powered into the fourth lap with a lead of 3.910secs over Asher Durham who had carved through from the third row to be running second ahead of Rodriguez, Toms, Mark Clayton and Stacey.

Rodriguez fought back, grabbing second with Clayton following him through to ease Durham back into fourth while Jones maintained his pace at the front and at half distance he had pulled a gap of 5.715secs over the pursuing pack.

Clayton was having a great scrap with Rodriguez, getting the better of the young Spaniard who then succumbed to the close attentions of Durham. Stacey was fifth from Toms, Atkins and Horsman.  Jones was storming clear, en route to win number fourteen, but adrift of him the pack was reshuffling with three riders separated by a quarter of a second.  Durham, Rodriguez and Clayton were trading places.
