Assen BSB: Iddon fastest in damp final practice session

Tyco BMW’s Christian Iddon was unfazed by the drying track conditions at Assen and was the quickest MCE British Superbike rider during the final timed free practice session.

There was a heavy rain shower overnight which left the track wet for the start of the morning session. Conditions did improve throughout the 45 minutes of lappery and at the end of the session the circuit was more damp than wet.

Iddon, who has committed his future with the Tyco team for 2018, lapped a 1’45.971 and was chased hard by rookie, Bradley Ray. The youngster was leading the timesheets until Iddon put down a sub 1’46 time.

Iddon was the only rider who clocked a 1’45 time, with a 1’45.971, with Ray lapping a 1’46.871. Smiths BMW’s Peter Hickman was the highest placed showdown rider in the session and after a crash in FP2 he bounced back with a 1’47.409, to go third fastest.

Fellow title fighters, Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne and JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam only did a handful of laps – seven and four respectively, as the pair did not want to risk anything in the mixed track conditions.

At the flag Byrne went P17 and Haslam P26. RAF Reserves Kawasaki’s Jake Dixon went 0.07s slower than Hickman, but still did enough to go fourth quickest with Glenn Irwin completing the top five. Anvil Hire TAG Yamaha’s Josh Brookes completed 15 laps and went 15th quickest with Honda’s Jason O’Halloran finishing the morning in 19th.

Pirelli National Superstock 1000 regulars, Danny Buchan, Josh Elliott and Richard Cooper are wildcarding in BSB this weekend and the trio finished the final timed session all inside the top ten. Cooper was heading the timing-screens on the ten minute mark, but at the flag went sixth, with Elliott and Buchan setting times that placed them P9 and 10th.
