Assen BSB: Law clears off as Supersport title fight intensifies

Mason Law took a dominant victory, his second of the season, in an action packed Dickies British Supersport Sprint race in which James Westmoreland with fourth place, just ahead of Tarran Mackenzie, pegged back a couple of points on the young Scot as their duel for the crown continued.

Law who had snatched pole start in the closing seconds from David Allingham in a somewhat mixed up grid by the damp conditions which saw series pace-setters Westmoreland and Mackenzie starting from the fourth and sixth rows of the 44 strong rider grid. Allingham started well by Law took him and then his Gearlink Kawasaki team-mate Andy Irwin followed him through.

Ray was on the charge, making up ground while out front Law, with the fastest lap of the race, was pulling clear. Ray was riding hard to try to stay with him, while Allingham was trying everything he knew to claw back into second place, and he did just that at the end of the fourth lap.

Ray though bit back to be running second though as half distance neared, he was over two seconds down on Law who was forging clear out front. But, Finnish rider Eemeli Lahti was causing problems, closing in and then nosing into contention. Luke Jones was charging through and clipped the back wheel of Ray – Jones went down but though Ray held on, he lost ground, running ride and rejoining in ninth.

Joe Francis went down as Law charged clear of a five rider scrap for second place with Allingham holding on to it while Mackenzie was joining the fun together with Westmoreland and they both gained places as Irwin strayed off-line taking 22 with him. Mackenzie was third just ahead of Westmoreland while Ray was battling back to be running seventh with a couple of laps remaining.

Law continued to dictate terms out front with Allingham running second and just into the penultimate lap Westmoreland nosed third at the expense of Mackenzie.  Westmoreland was hot into a corner, dropping back to fourth as 22 went through into third. Mackenzie was fifth.

It made for a great final lap duel but Lahti had just enough to hang on to third from Westmoreland and Mackenzie while out front Law took the victory, his second of the season, by 2.135secs from Allingham.
