Assen WSBK: Davies fastest in second practice

Aruba Ducati's Chaz Davies pipped Tom Sykes in the second World Superbike free practice session at Assen, storming to the top of the timesheets with his final run.

Sykes, who enjoyed the best of the morning practice, had long led the session and his 1’36.068 looked set to be good enough to confirm him as the fastest man on Friday, but Davies had other ideas.

As the session began to wind down, the Welshman returned to the track – having previously attacked Sykes’ time earlier – and jumped up timesheets, visibly quicker than Sykes’ best in all three sectors to record a time of 1’35.748 around the Dutch circuit.

Davies and Sykes look set to battle it out again at Assen after last weekend’s thrilling race one duel at Aragon, and the winner of that race, Jonathan Rea, will be expecting to be in the mix too.

The Castletown resident tried bravely to depose his team-mate late on but although under in the first two sectors, he could only finish third with a 1’36.190.

Rea is leading the championship from Leon Haslam and the Red Devils Aprilia rider confirmed he’ll be right on his tail from tomorrow, with the Derbyshire man’s 1’36.480 leaving him in fourth, ahead of rookie and local man Michael Van Der Mark, and Jordi Torres.

Alex Lowes was able to put a disappointing first practice session behind him as he brought his GSX-R1000 home for seventh and well ahead of team-mate Randy DePuniet, back in 16th.

Sylvain Guintoli, after a promising morning session, could only find enough for eighth place on the timesheets this afternoon and right with his 1’36.950 with Xavi Fores just .014 off the Frenchman’s pace.

A pleasantly surprising result from free practice two was that of Leon Camier’s, who managed to back up a solid morning session with a top ten finish on his MV Agusta.

Camier’s development problems with the MV Agusta have been well documented this season but already Assen looks to be a step in the right direction.

The 28-year-old had a torrid time with electronic issues at Aragon but his 1’37.061 and tenth place in the second practice session this afternoon proves that progress is afoot.
