‘Aussies will left breathing our fumes’ says PI Classic British captain

Phillip Island Classic British team captain Keith Higgs believes the Australian squad will be left breathing his riders’ fumes at next month’s event after wheeling in Macau champion and MCE British Superbike race winner Peter Hickman but revealed that Jeremy McWilliams might not be 100 per cent fit.

Higgs (no relation) says he is really excited to be coming back Down Under for the 24th running of the Australian Motorcycle News International Island Classic, as he believes UK team is stronger than ever with an impressive line-up who are more than ready to do battle with the Aussies yet again.

“Peter is a big welcome to the team,” Higgs told bikesportnews.com. “I’m sure he will love the event, the bike, the team atmosphere and the track, and kicking Aussie arse.”

With McWilliams slightly-injured after getting cleaned up by a car a few days ago while out cycling, Higgs did explain that the 52-year-old might be struggling to be 100% fit for the event.

“There is nothing like adrenalin and an Aussie challenge to overcome the pain,” joked Higgs, who has been team captain since 2008.

With likes of John McGuinness, Conor Cummins, James Hillier, Glen Richards and new recruits which also include Alex Sinclair and Michael Neeves, Higgs said that he is ‘spoilt for choice’ when it comes to picking the eight riders that will race tooth and nail on the Saturday and Sunday.

“With the talent pool we have for 2017, it looks like I will be helping out in the commentary box during the races… In saying that, I’ll be trying my hardest to qualify for the team and hope for one race, at least,” said Higgs.

Higgs concluded with: “Although the Aussies look impressive and strong, I believe the UK will once again leave them breathing our exhaust fumes… roll on January.”

Next year will mark Higgs’s 13th at the International Island Classicand he will will again race his 1978 Harris Kawasaki 1170.
