Baz gets MotoGP call up as Espargaro stand-in

Loris Baz will make his return to MotoGP at Silverstone this weekend as he has been selected to replace Pol Espargaro in the Red Bull KTM team.

Baz last raced in the blue riband class in 2017 for Avintia Ducati before moving to WorldSBK but his participation this weekend doesn’t means he will miss the Portimao test, which kicks off on Thursday in Portugal, as his Althea team weren’t going anyway.

Teams with crocked riders would usually field a tester but Mika Kallio is on the sidelines after undergoing knee surgery and Randy De Puniet only signed on as his stand-in a week ago.

The Frenchman’s agreement with KTM states he will not race, so the Austrian factory had to find someone with recent MotoGP experience who was available. Baz and De Puniet have the same personal manager, too.
