Brands BSB: 'A clean' start important for front-rower Ellison

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s James Ellison wants a good start during the MCE British Superbike races at the Brands Hatch Indy circuit, with the hopes of replicating his double victory that he had at the track last year.

The Kendal racer holds the circuit lap record and will start race-one from second on the starting grid. But in a repeat from qualifying at the last round at Oulton Park, Ellison thought he had clinched pole position but in the last second he was once again pipped to the post, but this time by Quattro Plant Kawasaki’s Luke Mossey.

Ellison was also careful not to overheat the tyres, especially with all the right handers at the circuit and his strategy was to do one fast lap then one slower one, and it appeared to work today after he lapped a solid 45.303.

“It was good. We got good consistency and I was trying to do one fast lap, let the tyres go a little bit and then do another fast lap, as to not overheat the right hand side of the tyre as there are only two left handers here. But the right gets a real hammering around Clearways and sometimes it does overheat a little bit and when you are doing a qualifying lap it can get a little bit too hot,” said Ellison, at the track.

“So my strategy was one fast lap one slow lap then one fast lap, but we didn’t have enough to match Luke, and it was so close at the end and I thought I had pole position like I did at Oulton Park, and I came around and the P2 spot was there, and fair play to Luke for putting that lap in at the end as I didn’t think anyone had that much left in the tyres.

“He obviously has the race pace and these are the boys we will be fighting with tomorrow and the times are so close and anyone out of the front three rows could possibly win tomorrow depending on how the start goes. So most thing important thing for us is to get away clean. We did win two races here last year but it wont be that easy again surely, as there are lots of fast guys out there at the minute so I have to dig deep and see what we can produce tomorrow.”
