Brands BSB: Breaking lap record a ‘possibility’ for Ellison

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s James Ellison is feeling confident that he has the package that ‘could possibly’ break the Brands Hatch Indy lap record during this MCE British Superbike race weekend.

The temperature is meant to get warmer tomorrow and for race-day on Sunday, and after the second free practice session in much cooler climates this afternoon Ellison set a time that was only three tenths off lap record place. Gregorio Lavilla’s time of a 45.460 hasn’t been broken in eight years and Ellison would like to set his own lap record on his ZX-10R.

The Kendal lad topped the FP2 timesheets, with a 45.700 rotation, edging ahead of fellow title challengers, Buildbase BMW’s Ryuichi Kiyonari and Milwaukee Yamaha’s Josh Brookes. Now Ellison has the front row and ultimately pole position as his next target during the qualifying sessions on Saturday.

“It’s definitely a possibility but I don’t know. We are confident with the package that we have that we could be quick enough to get the lap record, but to do that I need a perfect lap,” said Ellison, speaking to bikesportnews.com in the team garage.

“I want pole here as it can be a busy track, but I am aiming for the front row. I have been a title contender for three years, but I experienced a lot of technical problems in 2013, and in 2014 I had to overcome injury, so it makes me even more hungry for the title.

“We did make a lot of changes between FP1 and FP2 today, and that was mostly on the shocks, and whatever we did worked, but we will be trying out some bike parts tomorrow.”

Team boss Mark Smith-Halvorsen said: “I am very confident that when the weather picks up tomorrow and Sunday that, that lap record (by Gregorio Lavilla) is going. I hope it is James Ellison that gets it of course.”
