Brands BSB: Byrne makes history with fastest ever lap in FP3

Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne destroyed the Brands Hatch MCE British Superbike lap record to set the fastest ever two-wheel time during today’s third free practice session.

The local rider charged to a 1’24.614 lap to make history at the Kent track, putting him in a good place ahead of this afternoon’s qualifying session.

A dry track and sunshine greeted the BSB riders as they headed out, and it was Aussie Josh Brookes on the Anvil TAG Racing Yamaha who climbed to the top of the timesheets first, as he banked two quick laps on an old, 24 lap tyre.

But wasn’t long before Byrne hit back with a 1’25.253 to go to the top, holding the place for a large chunk of the session.

As the lap times began to tumble, JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Luke Mossey moved up to second, but moments later fell at Druids, emerging unhurt.

Byrne remained in command for much of the session, as Brooks grabbed himself some fresh tyres and moved back up to second place with just under 10 minutes to run.

But as the minutes ticked down, Honda Racing’s Dan Linfoot came from nowhere to go fastest as spots of rain were reported in the second sector.

However, the rain never really materialised and with just three minutes to go, Byrne set a record-breaking 1:24.705. Clearly not content with this, he stayed out and set the new history-making lap, some 0.525secs faster than anyone else.

Tyco BMW’s Christian Iddon shot up to third with around half a minute to go, but was quickly deposed by a hard-charging Brookes, who moved back up to third behind Linfoot.

Iddon had to settle for fourth quickest ahead of Smiths BMW pilot Peter Hickman. James Ellison was the fastest of the McAMS Yamaha riders in sixth, ahead of the RAF Reserves Kawasaki of Jake Dixon.

Leon Haslam was the quickest of the JG Speedfit boys, finishing eighth and just ahead of Mossey as Quattro Plant FS-3 Racing’s Billy McConnell rounded out the top 10.
