Brands BSB: Byrne quickest in opening session

Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne spent the majority of the opening free practice session in his garage at Brands Hatch and only put down ten laps, but that was enough for him to top the MCE British Superbike timesheets this morning.

The track was a bit damp at the start of the 45 minute outing and only a handful of riders went out on track, and the first one to venture out was Brookes. But with only 20 minutes remaining the rest of the field made an appearance as the track fully dried out.

At the end of the session the top five was completed by showdown riders with Byrne on top with a 1’26.123, followed by young-gun Jake Dixon with a 1’26.177. Anvil Hire TAG Yamaha’s Josh Brookes lapped a 1’26.328 with the trio being the only one’s to lap a sub 1’27 time.

Smiths BMW Peter Hickman and Honda’s Jason O’Halloran were close to the other title fighters pace but did clock times that put them firmly P4 and P5 respectively on the sheets. JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam did not go out until there were around 10 minutes remaining to FP1.

The Smalley rider did nine laps of the track and then retreated to his garage and he ended the session in 14th. Former World Superbike star, Kyle Ryde made his debut this morning in the Superbike class. The youngster is riding in place of the crocked Billy McConnell on the FS-3 Racing Kawasaki. He did not want to take any risks this morning on the drying circuit and went P25 on the screens.

Cooper, Iddon, Smrz, Guintoli and Linfoot completed the top ten, followed by Irwin, Laverty and Lee Jackson. Bradley Ray experienced a technical issue at Dingle Dell early on, so he was unable to put down a quick lap time.
