Brands BSB: Ellison edges Byrne in second practice session

McAMS Yamaha's James Ellison once again was the fastest rider out on track, but this time during the second MCE British Superbike free practice session at the Brands Hatch Indy circuit.

In a repeat of the morning session, the Kendal rider looked like the man to beat as he once again threw down the gauntlet to his title rivals. In FP1 Ellison set a new outright lap record, but he was unable to lap a 45.0 again this afternoon, but came very close to repeating his fastest time, with a 45.120.

Be Wiser Ducati's Shane Byrne was heading the sheets, before Ellison went one tenth quicker, but the reigning champ was up the sharp end throughout the 45 minute outing, with a strong 45.218.

JG Speedfit Kawasaki's Luke Mossey went P3 on the timesheets after a 45.225, with his teammate Leon Haslam setting his quickest time on his penultimate lap - 30 of 32 at the Kent circuit, and ended the day going 0.4s faster than his FP1 time.

Honda Racing's Dan Linfoot excelled with five minutes remaining and set a 45.463 to go seventh quickest, and that was the Northerner fastest time of the weekend so far. Anvil Hire TAG Racing's Josh Brookes left his best lap until last and  a 45.464 on his 29th rotation placed his eighth.

Iddon, Ray, Guintoli and Hopkins were all inside the top ten times. The Moto Rapido Ducati of John Hopkins was P2 for a while, but he did a sub 46 lap, of a 45.9 to go tenth on the Panigale. Irwin, Laverty and O'Halloran were 11th, 12th and 13th respectively.

There were some rider's missing from proceedings this afternoon which included Tyco BMW's Davide Giugliano. The Italian is sitting out the rest of the track activities today after an earlier FP1 crash.

He will be assessed before the final free practice session tomorrow morning. Tommy Bridewell's ZX-10RR caught fire in FP1 and his team had  too much work to do to repair the bike and the Devizes swearbox was unable to make it on track this afternoon.

It was a case of déjà vu for young gun Bradley Ray, as he crashed for the second time today, but at Clearways this time. He was declared OK at the trackside, and when the chequered flag came out he remained sixth quickest overall.
