Brands BSB: Haslam extends championship lead to 80 points

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam boarded a plane to the Suzuka Eight-Hours safe in the knowledge he has an 80-point gap at the top of the Bennetts British Superbike points table after this weekend’s Brands Hatch round.

The Derbyshireman, who looks likely to join Suzuka team-mate Jonathan Rea full-time in WorldSBK next season, took a brace of third places at the Kent track and finished ahead of closest rival Jake Dixon in both outings.

“I pushed on hard to catch these guys mid-race, we made some improvements and got fastest lap so my pace was a little but better but for the last three or four laps we really struggled. I felt like I was losing a little on acceleration with the changes we made but I’m happy,” said Haslam.

“We have extended the lead but I am a little disappointed we didn’t get to fight with these two on the last couple of laps. We need something more for here and it is something we need to look into for the showdown round here in October.”
