Brands BSB: ‘It’s gutting to finish second’ – Irwin

Glenn Irwin has admitted his disappointment at missing out on the win by such a close margin as he fell victim to a last-minute pass for victory by race winner Leon Haslam.

The Be Wiser Ducati rider revealed he didn’t initially believe he had the speed to run with early race leader Michael Laverty, but says a pass on team-mate Shane Byrne gave him the confidence he needed.

But Irwin also admitted he was conscious that a runner-up points haul could all be lost if he made the wrong move for the lead.

“When [Michael] went by, his pace was pretty phenomenal, much stronger than all of us,” he said. “I thought, ‘wow, he’s checking out, this is going to be a scrap for second or third.’

“But I began to realise I had pace when my team mate passed me twice and I managed to get him back and then Leon and Michael.

“It’s gutting to finish second… I’ll always fight to the last thing and I know Leon would as well. I tried everything to prevent him being able to do the move he did, and he did overdo it a little bit and I thought about a do-or-die.

“But there’s fighting ‘til the end and then there’s being a complete wingnut, and that’s what I didn’t want to be. So 20 points is good and more importantly the showdown credits are what we wanted to collect.
