Tarran Mackenzie added to the family pedigree as, in his rookie term in the series, he won the Dickies British Supersport Championship – the 21 year old matched the title success of his elder brother Taylor to the delight of his proud dad, triple BSB champion Niall.
Second in the Sprint race, Mackenzie went into the Feature race with a lead of 21 points over James Westmoreland but the CAME BPT Yamaha rider crashed heavily at one thirds distance, bringing out the red flags.
That moment confirmed the title for Mackenzie but the young Scot was determined to sign off the campaign with a victory and he did that with the decisive move at the last corner of the race to head off Bradley Ray who finished third in the title stakes, four points down on the runner-up Westmoreland.
Mackenzie was fast away from Sprint race winner Ray with Andrew Irwin just ahead of David Allingham while James Westmoreland paid the penalty for a tardy get-away as he ran back in eighth place at the end of the of the opening lap.
Ray was on the charge, taking the lead, with Irwin following him through and then Luke Jones eased third at the expense of Mackenzie who then came under fire from Ben Currie. Joe Francis was running seventh just ahead of his team-mate Westmoreland.
Ray had the edge by 0.846secs from Irwin with Allingham third from Currie while Mackenzie was just ahead of Westmoreland. The Allingham was struck by a machine problem, pulling off, while it was all happening in the scrap for third.
Mackenzie was on the attack, taking third from Currie on the sixth lap but then disaster for Westmoreland who high-sided off, touching a damp patch, and being struck by his bike. It all happened in front of Jones who tipped off. The red flags came out.
The re-start, over nine laps, was formality for Mackenzie – the pressure was off, he knew that the title was his. Irwin made a flying start from Ray and Mackenzie with Currie fourth from Francis but Ray was on the charge, snatch the lead. Mackenzie was not going to be left behind and he followed through into second. Currie snatched third and Irwin was back in fourth at the end of the first lap.
Mackenzie was full of fight closing in on Ray while Francis was on the ascendancy taking third from Currie with Sam Wilford running fifth from Luke Hedger and Irwin and Joe Collier. Mackenzie was little more than a bike length down on Ray as they slugged it out at the front, gapping third placed Francis by over a second.
Mackenzie powered in the fastest lap to be just 0.058secs down on Ray going into the sixth lap as the high-speed shoot-out for supremacy powered on, but Ray had the edge, just. Mackenzie all but levelled at Paddock Hill Bend on the last lap but Ray held on till the final corner when the young Scot nosed his Stauff Connect Academy Kawasaki ahead to take the win by 0.062secs.
Francis took third from Currie, Wilford, Irwin, Hedger and Collier with Matt Truelove ninth from Scott Deroue.
