Brands BSB: McConnell conquers crash-fest to nab Stock 1000 spoils

Billy McConnell bounced back from a crash in yesterday’s two-part Pirelli National Superstock 1000 race to win today’s crash-riddled scrap.

Buildbase Suzuki’s support series ace fended off current series leader Keith Farmer by less than a tenth of a second in the restarted 12-lapper after yesterday’s double winner Joe Collier hit the tarmac.

The race was off to a less-than-ideal start as at least five riders crashed on the very first lap after just two corners of the original start, including Collier.

Marshals immediately brought out the red flags and began the clean-up process, resulting in a short delay.

When action got back underway, Tom Neave grabbed the holeshot ahead of Farmer and McConnell, but his lead was short lived after the Stevowaki Suzuki rider, who binned it yesterday at the final corner on the final lap, went down again, leaving McConnell to lead.

Bathams BMW’s Taylor Mackenzie soon slotted into second as constant threat Alex Olsen followed him into third, pushing Farmer back in the pack.

Olsen moved up to second at Paddock Hill bend, and just a lap later he levered McConnell aside to hit the front.

Former champ Mackenzie put paid to his hopes moments later after crashing out, deploying the safety car and slowing up action.

When the car came off circuit a couple laps later, Olsen held onto the lead ahead of McConnell and Tyco BMW’s Farmer, while OMG Racing Suzuki’s former champ Josh Elliott made inroads on the leading three in fourth.

With two to go, 2014 Supersport king McConnell slotted underneath Olsen at Paddock Hill to take the lead, and it wasn’t long before Farmer followed suit and shoved Olsen aside at Clearways.

And while the Northern Irishman tried to get past McConnell in the closing metres of the race, he couldn’t make the move stick and had to settle for second behind the Aussie - just 0.075s off the win - with Olsen in third.
