Brands BSB: Phillips grabs dramatic debut Stock 600 win

Sandown Racing’s Carl Phillips claimed his debut Pirelli National Superstock 600 win in dramatic circumstances, after the leading duo of Tom Ward and Lewis Rollo crashed out in synchronisation with two laps remaining.

The race got underway and from pole position, Jordan Weaving took the holeshot. However, before even a lap could be completed, with five riders going down at Druids, the red flag was brought out and full restart was needed.

From the restart, South African Weaving again took the holeshot but was quickly knocked back to third by Tom Ward and Lewis Rollo.

Ward held the lead for the vast majority of the race with young Scotsman Lewis Rollo comfortably sitting behind him. They opened out a half a second advantage over Weaving who had a gaggle of riders queuing up behind him.

With six laps remaining, Phillips managed to move from fifth to third with a dive under the inside at Clearways and as a result, he began closing down on the race leaders.

Two laps to go and it was a three man fight for the lead, with Ward still leading from Rollo and now Phillips. The trio were hard on the brakes into Druids and in perfect synchronisation the front end of Ward’s and Rollo’s machines washed out from beneath them and Phillips was the new race leader.

He cleared away to take the chequered flag, his first British Championship win and a comfortable thirteen point lead going into next weekend’s Donington Park support race.

The fight for the final podium spots was a little more heated, with second to fifth being covered across the line by less than two tenths of a second.

NMT No Limits Kawasaki’s Jordan Weaving managed to take second, 0.065 of a second ahead of Sam Thompson, who in turn was 0.053 ahead of Moto-Breakers Kawasaki’s Keenan Armstrong.

A tenth further back of Armstrong was Sorrymate.com Yamaha’s Kurt Wigley. SGR Racing’s Tom Oliver took sixth place after fighting off the close attention of Taz Taylor and Brad Jones.

The former championship leader Davey Todd came across the line in ninth place and as a result his four point lead has now become a thirteen point deficit to Phillips.

Rounding out the top ten was Matt Wigley, who tumbled after the chequered flag at Paddock Hill Bend.
