Brands BSB: Rutter focusing on Stock 1000 class

Bathams SMT’s Michael Rutter was on the MCE British Superbike start list at the first round at Donington Park, and did take to the track for free practice one and two, but he did not compete in the double header. The road racing star is now focusing on doing well in the Superstock 1000 class, but has not given up on his Superbike ambitions and hopes to take part in some BSB races after the Isle of Man TT.

Rutter is keeping busy and is contesting the Pirelli National Superstock 1000 championship, which includes the all new back-to-back race format, which will consist of 38 laps this weekend. He is aiming for podiums but is not underestimating the strong calibre of rider’s competing in the class.

But not only that he is preparing for the North West 200, an event he has won thirteen times, and will compete in both Superbike and Superstock events on Bathams SMT S1000RR BMW machinery in three weeks time. In the Supersport class he will compete on the Yamaha R6 for the Thompson Plastering team.

The 44-year-old will also race at the Isle of Man TT and is expected to take part in the Classic TT and Macau GP too, but after the TT Rutter wants to not just compete in the Stock 1000 class, but has ambitions to line up on the starting grid in some BSB races too.

First he has to focus on this weekend’s track festivities at the Indy circuit in Kent in the Stock 1000's, and admits the ‘endurance’ race will be challenging.

“It is hard work this circuit, and it is hard for us as we have over 35 laps of this circuit - so it is going to difficult. This year we are doing Superstock. We wanted to do Superbike but it did not quite work out,” said Rutter, speaking to bikesportnews.com.

“It is a shame really as that I what I enjoy doing. We were not going to go and win it but we could have been top fifteen, top ten with a small team. Hopefully we can have a go after the TT when things quieten down. If everything goes well after the road racing we can look at doing a few races back-to-back.

“The North West 200 is in three weeks time, luckily we have got a lot of stuff ready for this year. The next test will be at Oulton and we will leave those bikes ready just for the North West 200. Then go to Oulton then off to the TT so it is a mega busy time.

“If we can get on the podium, would be good but it is so competitive, and hard work at the moment we are doing the Stock 1000’s until after the TT, and hopefully have a go on the Superbikes in BSB.”
