Brands BSB: ‘Toughest weekend we have had’ – Laverty

Tyco BMW’s Michael Laverty has labelled his MCE British Superbike weekend at the Brands Hatch Indy circuit as the one of the “toughest” he has ever had in racing.

His team are still working on the set-up of the S1000RR but even though they thought they found a solution in warm up on Sunday, it did not appear to pay off during the double header. The Wales-based rider wanted to get some solid points this weekend, but could only manage to come away with a thirteenth and nineteenth place finishes yesterday.

The Northern-Irishman usually gets progressively faster throughout a race weekend, but that wasn’t the case and his garage are working hard to come up with a solution. He is hopeful he will find his “peak” later on in the season, and put down some lap times that are quick enough to challenge for race wins, and pole positions.

But Laverty is remaining positive that he can get to grips with the bike and that the team will find a set-up that suits him, so that he can aim for a Showdown spot over the next few rounds.

“The race weekend was different and one of the toughest weekend’s we have ever had racing. I kind of had a difficult weekend at Donington, and I thought we came away with some answers,” said Laverty, speaking to bikesportnews.com.

“But theses small circuits mean that the problems are highlighted a bit more. We will learn from this and we will come back to the Oulton test with a revised setup. I know the feeling I am chasing but I haven’t managed to get that yet.

“It is a pretty tough thing to walk away from a weekend like this – I usually get stronger throughout the weekend and I usually turn the bike around. We made some changes in the last race and it didn’t work. I am not too happy this weekend but I am positive that I can turn things around.

“For race one I was three or four tenths a lap quicker than I had been, but then I went back to my feeling I had in qualifying, and race two I couldn’t do a lot with the bike and I felt like I was a sitting duck. All the races this year we have been progressing, but we didn’t today. I am looking forward to the test in Oulton and to try and find some base setting’s for the bike.

“We are going to have to make the Showdown but we have that testing time on the bike to develop it, and reach our peak later in the season. I am only a little bit down percentage wise and you see people doing fast laps with ease like James Ellison, and I was riding my nuts off and it is frustrating when you don’t get the time. But I need to understand the bike better - and we will get there, but it’s been tough.”
