BSN Promotion: ProMach engineering excellence

Looking for someone to design and produce competition or custom parts for either your racing or road bike? Then ProMach Design and Manufacturing should definitely be on your list of folk to call. Mick Edwards, the boss of the Stoke Golding based company, has a wealth of experience and a long list of big-name clients who rely on his expertise to keep them at the sharp-end of the pack.

Now in its 21st year of trading, ProMach specialises in bespoke machined cycle parts. The typical wish list for race bikes can range from adjustable or fixed offset yokes, to alter the steering geometry, down to front spindle assemblies, or even just simple datalogger and damper brackets. ProMach made its name producing high-end rearsets, and its footrest brackets and pegs are fully rebuildable, with easy access to replacement components. Rear caliper mounts, rear spindle assemblies - you name it, ProMach has probably already built it.

Mick Edwards began working in bike racing in 1995, and gives credit to Steve Hislop (the late legend who went on the become the MCN British Superbike champion), Martin Bennett, Ray Stringer and Gary Dickson for teaching him so much in a very successful season.

In that season, working weekends for the team, he was making parts for their race bikes and he spotted a gap in the market with the potential to offer his services to a wider client base. That led to an involvement with Rob McElnea’s Superbike team as his business grew, Mick not only provided purpose-built parts but also moved into sponsorship to raise awareness of his product range and services. The introduction on the Yamaha R6 Cup brought further involvement and as he says: “it is something that I am very proud of and look back on very fondly – they were pretty good days.”

The involvement in the BSB paddock continues with an involvement with various teams across the championships with Mick’s hands-on experience and skills readily available. “After 20 years we have had a good bit of practice at everything and can help with design and manufacture. We are machinists, not fabricators, and can design in 3D and then manufacture.”

It is that expertise with a reputation for producing top quality, reliable and strong products that has grown the business into road racing with numerous winning rides in the Isle of Man TT Superbike and Supersport races being achieved using components from ProMach.

“Padgetts, TAS, McAdoo are just some of the road racing teams we work with, while many riders, including the late great David Jefferies, trusted our products to stand up to the rigours of the TT. “Consequently bikes with our yokes, rearsets etc. have won and continue to win many major road races. In fact every major road race DJ won was on our rearsets, he was our best test pilot,” said Mick.

“Away from the racing scene, on short circuits and the roads, there is a developing scene on both the track day bikes – particularly sports bikes – and, curiously, Harley-Davidsons. “We apply the same principles in designing and producing competition parts in making bespoke parts for custom bike builders. We have seen a steady growth in interest from custom builders and have been involved in number of high-end bike projects with Charlie Stockwell from Kings Road Customs at Warr’s Harley-Davidson - one of the top custom builders in London.

“Typically we receive forks, brakes, wheel plus a design brief, then we design and manufacture all the parts needed to make it all fit together. All the customer then has to do is bolt it back in the bike. The same process can be applied to the rear wheel, chain adjusters, brake caliper mount etc.”

For road bikes, ProMach make footrest assemblies for sports bikes like the BMW S1000RR. “Customers can buy a kit from us and simply bolt it on, and we can supply spares as needed,” added Mick.

As well as consistent high quality, customers past, present and future can rely on the wealth of expertise and technical know-how gained through 20 years of experience working with race teams and being involved in a wide variety of project-style manufacturing.
