Buriram WSBK: Hayden puzzled by engine brake problems

Red Bull Honda’s Nicky Hayden has been hampered by serious engine brake issues which he and the Ten Kate technicians haven’t yet been able to find a fix for.

The former MotoGP champion couldn’t find any consistency with the system and it occasionally switched the engine into get-me-home mode, like your Ford Mondeo, which won’t have improved Hayden’s mood very much at all.

“We had some problems on corner entry with the engine brake strategies. We couldn’t get it consistent. Some laps I would be braking and the bike would go into recovery mode, lock the rear wheel essentially and I would have to pick up the bike and go straight. That makes it difficult to push and find the limit and some consistency,” said Hayden, speaking at the track.

“I struggled a lot with this and for the moment, we don’t understand really understand how to fix it. I was fighting with it at Phillip Island but there isn’t as much hard braking so you could manage it better. Here we hoped it would be better but you can’t rely on hope, you have to figure out the problems.”
