Cadwell BSB: Lights-to-flag race one win for Brookes

Milwaukee Yamaha’s Josh Brookes rode a faultless opening MCE British Superbike race at Cadwell Park, and led from the start to bag his fifth consecutive win of the season, and extending his lead in the overall championship.

RAF Reserves BMW’s Peter Hickman was hot on the heels of the Bringelly rider for the majority of the race, but at the end of the eighteen lapper Brookes was just too strong and came away with his 25th career victory.

PBM Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne managed to salvage sixth, but the reigning British Superbike champion missed out on those all important podium credits.

Joining local rider, Hickman and Brookes on the podium was fellow Australian, Smiths Racing’s Billy McConnell, who fought hard to snatch his first podium of his Superbike career and a debut rostrum for his team too.

At the start it was Brookes who got the hole-shot ahead of Mossey and Hickman. Kiyonari had a terrible start and fell back to last on the opening lap, but a rotation later pulled his S1000RR up to 22nd.

After a stellar qualifying session, Riders Motorcycles BMW’s Martin Jessopp went wide and fell back to 23rd after a good start with thirteen laps remaining.

On lap five Bridewell edged ahead of Danny Buchan to go up to fourth, but seconds later the tall Essex rider got the better of the Devizes swearbox coming out of the chicane.

Be Wiser Kawasaki’s Chris Walker retired to the pit with a technical problem, and at the same time his Be Wiser team-mate crashed on top of the Mountain on lap eight while in fourth, but he managed to walk away from the incident pretty much unscathed, and the safety car came out.

But just before Buchan crashed out, Hickman got the better of Mossey to soar into second, and after three laps the safety car went back into the pits. On lap twelve of eighteen McConnell pulled the pin and overtook Bridewell who fell back to fifth.

The current Motorpoint British Supersport champ had Quattro Plant Kawasaki’s Luke Mossey as his next target and going into Park Corner McConnell took advantage of a mistake from the Cambridgeshire lad and went into third as Mossey slipped to seventh.

On the last lap Brookes had a 1.8 second advantage over Hickman, but the battle for third really intensified as Bridewell had his eye on the podium but McConnell was not having any of it and held on to clinch
his team’s first podium in the Superbike class.

When the chequered flag appeared Bridewell held on to fifth, followed by his Tyco BMW team-mate, Michael Laverty, completing the top five to bag some solid points for his team.

Buildbase BMW’s newest recruit, Richard Cooper ended the race in a respectable eighth, behind Bennetts Suzuki’s Christian Iddon. Honda Racing’s Dan Linfoot rounded off the top ten.

The only remaining Team WD-40 bike on the grid, belonging to Jack Kennedy finished race one in a brave eleventh. The Dubliner fractured his fibula after a warm up crash this morning. His team-mate Taylor Mackenzie is in hospital having his appendix removed.

After a poor start Buildbase BMW’s Ryuichi Kiyonari fought his way up the pack to end race-one in fourteenth, with Quattro Plant Kawasaki’s Howie Mainwaring rounding off the points finishers. Moto Rapido Ducati’s John Hopkins just missed out on a points finish after he crossed the line in sixteenth.
