Cadwell BSB: One-lap wonder Ray bags pole

Qualifying three

Bradley Ray – 1’26.152
Leon Haslam – 1’26.188
Jake Dixon – 1’26.214

Bradley Ray needed just one flying lap in today’s Bennetts British Superbike qualifying to take pole position ahead of Leon Haslam and Jake Dixon for tomorrow’s first race.

The Buildbase Suzuki rider clocked a 1’26.152 with four minutes of the session still to run, and went straight into the pits to park up.

Ray was fast out of the gates on his first and only first flying lap, beating JG Speedfit Kawasaki's Haslam and Dixon to the top spot out of the blocks as three were covered by just 0.062s.

Danny Buchan had been holding onto fourth, but Glenn Irwin shot from ninth to fourth moments later to lead Bridewell on the provisional second row.

While Buchan continued to lap until the final whistle, Ray held onto his pole-winning time ahead of Haslam and RAF Regular and Reserves Kawasaki's Dixon, with Irwin ahead of Tommy Bridewell and Buchan on row two.

Christian Iddon wasn’t able to improve on his 1’26.812 and had to settle for the head of the third row while Peter Hickman and Josh Brookes complete the top nine.

Qualifying two

Leon Haslam – 1’26.339
Glenn Irwin – 1’14.342
Danny Buchan – 1’14.497

Bridewell was the fastest out of the gates at 1’26.574s, leading a gaggle of six riders in the 1’26 bracket, including Buchan, Dixon, Ray, Glenn Irwin and Luke Mossey.

The Devizes rider went quicker still at 1’26.512, before Haslam slotted in behind and just 0.031s off the lead time and Hickman slipped into fifth.

Irwin hit the lead with a 1’26.342, but Haslam was right on his tail and pipped him by a mere 0.003s to move to the top of the timesheets seconds later.

Tyco BMW’s Iddon was the only rider in the top nine not in the 1’26s, just 0.009s out, as he led Honda Racing’s O’Halloran and his team-mate Laverty in the chase to make the final qualifying session.

Buchan hopped up the order to third with a 1’26.498 before chopping 0.001s off the next lap, but he still stood over 0.150s off the leaders.

With seconds to spare, McAMS Yamaha's Brookes shot from 15th to eighth with a 1’26.858, while Iddon followed him into the top nine to knock Mossey down into 10th.

Qualifying one

Leon Haslam – 1’26.834
Danny Buchan – 1’26.914
Bradley Ray – 1’26.952

Ray came out with guns ablaze, immediately hitting the 1’26s with a 1’26.952 on his very first flying lap while everyone else was left chasing in the 27s, including Buchan, Iddon and Cooper.

Late starter Dixon immediately shot into second with a 1’27.100, just as Haslam - who was still trying to improve on his 1’28.190 - had a scare as he ran off at the Hairpin, but just kissed the barrier.

Moto Rapido Ducati’s Bridewell jumped up to fourth, but was only in place for a few minutes before Glenn Irwin shot forward to third and Buchan moved into the lead, the latter clocking the only other 1’26 of the session at 1’26.914, nudging Ray back to second.

Back on track, Haslam clinched his Q2 spot with a 1’27.293, going sixth fastest, while Smith's Racing BMW man Hickman moved into ninth and Mackenzie secured his place in the next session in 12th.

With five minutes to go, Brookes sat 17th, but was knocked back onto the bubble in 18th after Martin Jessopp moved up to 17th, knocking Movuno.com Halsall Racing’s Chrissy Rouse, who had crashed early on at Charlies, out of advancement.

Meanwhile, Shaun Winfield dumped his Anvil Hire TAG Racing Yamaha at the chicane, though he wasn’t in a threatening position for the top 18.

In the closing laps of the session, outright lap record holder Haslam laid down his 1’26.834 to shove FS-3 Racing's Buchan back to second while Brookes put in a 1’27.600 to move into a more comfortable 13th.
