Cartagena test a ‘learning curve’ for BSB rookie Mackenzie

Team WD-40’s Taylor Mackenzie is using the Pro-Test in Cartagena to adapt from racing a Supersport machine to a Superbike. The MCE British Superbike debutant still can’t believe his luck that he is racing in the premier class, but is spending his track time learning how to control his Kawasaki.

His team are not making any changes to his bike, as Mackenzie feels that the ZX-10 is better than him at the moment and doesn’t see the point in trying to make too many changes to the bike. He is here in Spain for the rest of the week, and hopes by the end of it he will have learned to control the Kawasaki and begin to feel confident too.

“We have just left the bike all the same and it is just a learning process for me, but I haven’t stopped smiling all day. Compared to a Supersport bike you have to pick it up more and get on the fat bit of the tyre, which is the main thing really – and it wheelies a lot more than a Supersport bike, so you are just trying to control it,” said Mackenzie, speaking to bikesportnews.com at the track.

“Everyone looks at lap times and I am never going to come out of this test the fastest but the more lap times I can do the better, but it is going to be a long season for me, but hopefully towards the end of the year I can get close to the front. But there is nothing to change on the bike at the moment, as the bike is better than me.

“There is so much to learn on the bike, and it is so different to anything I have ridden before, so there is no point changing things on the bike until I have had sometime out on it and riding it. The team is mega and I have a new crew chief, Danny Wright and he is really good to work with, and having my brother in the team is good too.”
