Cookstown 100: Weekend race report and results

This weekend saw the opening Irish Road Race of 2015, the KDM Cookstown 100, and Guy Martin race to a sensational Superbike double on his Tyco BMW in front of record crowds, William Dunlop taking the CD/IC Yamaha to a terrific double in the Supersport class while Michael Dunlop (Milwaukee Yamaha) had an up and down day finishing a close second to Martin in the Open race then winning the Supertwin race on his MD Racing Kawasaki before crashing out of the feature KDM Hire Cookstown 100 race having just taken the lead from his great rival Martin.

The Royal Hotel Open ‘A’ saw Martin take the lead from pole man Derek Sheils on lap two with Dunlop coming from fourth to second on lap four of six.

He set the fastest lap of the race on lap five with a speed of 90.267mph, but Martin and the Tyco BMW held on to win by 0.114sec.

Sheils was three seconds back in third spot a second ahead of an impressive roads debut on the Wilson Craig Honda for Derek McGee with the second Tyco BMW of William Dunlop a further two seconds back in fifth coming through from the second group of riders.
Dean Harrison retired his Mar-Train Yamaha on the second lap with a broken gear linkage.

In the sun-drenched feature race Sheils again led on the opening lap from Martin and Dunlop, the Tyco BMW hitting the front on lap two ahead of Sheils and Dunlop.
On lap four Dunlop was into second and with the fastest lap of the day on lap five of 90.708mph he closed right onto Martin’s back wheel.

On lap seven the Milwaukee Yamaha had just taken the lead when Dunlop high sided from the machine at Mackney a tight adverse camber right hander without injury bringing out the red flags.
Martin was declared the winner 1.2secs ahead of Sheils on his BikeBits NI Kawasaki, the Mar-Train Yamaha of Dean Harrison coming from the second group of riders to finish three seconds behind Sheils on corrected time with William Dunlop just 0.4sec back in fourth also from the ‘B’ group.

Seven and a half seconds back in fifth was Jamie Hamilton almost a second ahead of James Cowton in sixth.

In his usually witty manner Martin said, “I could have smoked a Woodbine in the big race, the Tyco BMW was so stable and working just mint. When Michael came past I was never under any pressure and was just sussing out my plan to pass him on the last lap. We had an advantage on the back section on the track and the speed on the front straight. I didn’t need it in the end.”

William riding the CD/IC R6 Yamaha scored back to back Supersport wins, producing a faultless display in the invitational race, held over from Friday evening due to poor weather, five and a half seconds clear of Harrison taking his best result in only his second year at Cookstown after a race long battle with Jamie Hamilton and James Cowton - less than half a second covering the three as they flashed past the chequered flag

McGee, who finished fifth in race one, pushed Dunlop all the way in the championship Supersport race less than a second behind at the end of the seven laps.

Harrison was a further half a second behind in third, eight seconds clear of fourth finisher Hamilton, Sheils and Michael Sweeney coming from group ‘B’ to finish fifth and sixth some nine seconds behind Hamilton.

Michael Dunlop retired from both, although he set the fastest Supersport lap in race two at 88.990mph on his MD Racing Yamaha.
Michael wasn’t to be denied a win on the day as he led the six-lap Supertwin race from start to finish, but it wasn’t easy as he was hounded throughout by Sweeney, Hamilton and Cowton as the ER6 Kawasaki quartet circulated in close company with less than a second separating them at the chequered flag. In fact all four broke the class lap record with Cowton setting the new record at 84.321mph on lap four.

The Moto3 (125GP) race saw a first win for Joey’s Bar 125cc Honda with Sam Wilson at the controls heading home Nigel Moore by 2.7secs with Paul Jordan a further 0.7sec back in third.
Local rider Dean Campbell took his 600cc Suzuki to victory in the Senior Support ‘A’ Race a second and a half clear of Kevin Fitzpatrick while in Junior Support ‘A’ Brian Coomey snatched victory passing Ben Rea on the final corner to win by a tenth of a second with road race debutant Adam McLean third, all three 650cc Kawasaki mounted.

Amongst the other winners in the mammoth 19-race programme were a Barry Davidson double in the classis races, Paul Gartland had a double in Open ‘B’ and Supertwin ‘B’ races, Joe Newbould triumphed in the feature ‘B’ race and Andy Lawson won Supersport ‘B’.
