Donington BSB: Hickman surprised with third row start

RAF Reserves BMW’s Peter Hickman will start the opening MCE British Superbike race at Donington Park tomorrow from the third row, which is no mean feat considering the Louth racer only sat on his bike last week.

Hickman pushed himself all the way to Q3, and on an SC0 tyre set a 1’30.322 to start from P7 on the grid, and even the racer is surprised with his pace and the fact that he made it through all three qualifying sessions.

Even though he is happy with his place heading up the third row he is adamant that improvements need to be made to his BMW, as he is still having some issues with rear grip. But Hickman feels his team have made big changes, especially to the electronics which have helped him enormously over the course of the race weekend.

“I don’t know how we ended up seventh – but we have. The bike doesn’t feel too bad. We still have some improvements to make and the bike is not perfect by any means and electronically we have made big steps from yesterday, and I am really happy to be honest,” said Hickman, speaking to bikesportnews.com.

“The first time I tried a zero all weekend was in Q2, and I rode a zero on my best lap. I tried an SC1 in the first session, but there wasn't a big difference really. We have a problem with rear grip, with driving off the turns and it was spinning a lot, but we need to work on that. I think we will race on a one [tyre] to be honest – but we are still doing our testing in front of everyone but it is going good.”
