Donington BSB: 'It just went vertical' - Byrne

Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne says he made today’s opening Bennetts British Superbike Championship race hard for himself after wheelying off the line at the start.

The six-time champion managed to salvage second place after making a move on James Ellison at the hairpin in the final lap.

Byrne spent most of today’s 18-lap scrap battling his way back after dropping down to eighth after his bad start, and admitted he knew it was coming as soon as he lined up.

“I pulled up on grid and everything seemed normal so I put the bike in gear, started to rev a little as soon as I did the bike felt like it as going to jolt forward,” he said.

“The jolts were getting bigger and bigger and I thought ‘I’ve absolutely no idea what going to happen when I let go of the clutch in a minute when the light goes out’.

“I just tried to rev it, I must’ve moved a fraction of a millimetre when the lights went out and it just went vertical. It definitely made things harder for me. It was a tough race for me, I’m sure it’d have been easier if I’d got away at the front with them but I’m happy to take the points. It’s onwards and upwards for tomorrow.”
