Donington BSB: Ray doubles up after race two tyre gamble

Bradley Ray doubled up as he took the second Bennetts British Superbike Championship win as the track dried up at Donington Park this afternoon.

The 20-year-old beat Leon Haslam overt the line by 3.450s after being the only rider to choose a medium front in a race which looked to be a tyre gamble from the outset.

Following his debut win yesterday afternoon, Ray started today’s race from pole aboard the Buildbase Suzuki and immediately capitalised, shooting off the line into the lead.

Behind, Honda’s Dan Linfoot moved up to second ahead of the Be Wiser Ducati’s of Shane Byrne and Glenn Irwin. Haslam had also made a good start and wasted no time in passing Byrne for third.

By Lap Seven, Ray had a lead of more than two seconds on Linfoot, as a charging Haslam began to close in .A lap later he made the pass on Linfoot to move into second place at the Fogarty Esses.

Ray was more than five seconds ahead, but Haslam soon began to reel him in as the pair continued to set quicker and quicker laps.

Behind, Luke Mossey and RAF Regulars & Reserves Kawasaki rider Jake Dixon had a bit of a moment when the latter gave Mossey a nudge coming into Foggy esses, forcing Mossey to drop a couple of places.

Mossey was determined to make amends and spent the rest of the race battling his way back through as the track continued to dry.

With Ray now safe in the lead and keeping Haslam at bay by well over three seconds, Byrne tried to make a move on Buchan at the Melbourne Hairpin but went in too hot and overshot on the 14th lap.

He was forced to make do with fifth, as the order at the front didn’t change, and Ray took his second win of the weekend over Haslam, as Linfoot was third.

Buchan saw off a charge from Byrne to take fourth as Iddon overcame a tough race and a crash in warm up to beat Irwin to sixth by 1000th of a second.

Mossey brought the second JG Speedfit machine home eighth ahead of Jason O’Halloran on the second Honda as Michael Laverty took 10th.
