Donington BSB: Stapleford claims maiden Supersport win

Profile Triumph’s Luke Stapleford took his debut Motorpoint British Supersport victory after a six lap dash at a sunshine bathed Donington Park.

Stapleford took the holeshot from pole position before Gearlink Kawasaki’s Glenn Irwin dived under the inside at Hollywood.

The Northern Irishman managed hold on to the lead by half race distance meanwhile his teammate, Ben Wilson, was flying through to the front from the third row of the grid.

Wilson dived past Dixon and Ryde with one move at the Melbourne Loop taking third place before the safety car came out after Freddy Pett crashed out at the Foggy Esses, leaving debris across the racing line.

After two laps under the safety car, the red flag was brought out with the debris still not cleared.

The restart would be six laps and it was Stapleford who took the holeshot for the second time but once again, Irwin quickly reclaimed the lead.

Irwin was followed shortly after by Ben Wilson but with three laps remaining, Stapleford began his comeback.

First he dived past Wilson and then Irwin with two laps remaining at Redgate corner.

Behind, Smiths Triumph’s Jake Dixon was making a late charge and looked to challenge Stapleford for the win on the final lap but the Profile Triumph rider held on to claim his inaugural Supersport win.

Dixon took second, his debut British Supersport podium, and the fastest lap of the race with his last lap, handing him pole position for tomorrow’s feature race.

Glenn Irwin took the last step on the podium with third place.

CF Motorsport’s Kyle Ryde fought hard throughout the race but narrowly missed out on a podium in his first Supersport outing, having to settle with fourth place.
