Donington BSB Test: Byrne happy with 'progress' of the Ducati

Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne narrowly missed out on taking the fastest rider accolade during the official MCE British Superbike test at Donington Park yesterday, and was only 0.044 seconds off the best lap set by Tyco BMW’s Michael Laverty on the combined timesheets.

Byrne was not too focused on lap times on Thursday and is concentrating more on the opening BSB round at Silverstone in a few days time, but he is happy with the progress that the Panigale is making, and was even able to top the timing-screens in the second testing session yesterday.

A 1’29.342 was the fastest that Byrne has gone around the Donington track, and he still has to keep reminding himself that he is on a completely new machine, and with a different package from last season.

“It was great to top the timesheets in the second session today and that put a smile on my face, but it’s what I’m paid to do,” said Byrne.

“We have worked hard since Silverstone and are still making chunks of progress and I have to keep reminding myself that we have a brand new make of bike, a brand new model and lots of other things which are new in the team so to be up with those riders on established set-ups isn’t too shabby at this stage.

“That was the quickest I’ve been round Donington but to me, times in testing are irrelevant, it’s what we do in the races next weekend that matter.”
