Donington BSB test: Guintoli developing electronics and chassis

Bennetts Suzuki’s Sylvain Guintoli braved the cold and wet weather conditions at Donington Park during the MCE British Superbike test, setting fourth fastest time on board the new GSX-R1000.

The former WorldSBK Champion recently tested at Almeria in Spain where he worked on a good base setting for his bike and rode with the standard engine and chassis. But the electronics and the spec Motec ECU is the big difference for Guintoli, who spent 2016 in WSBK, and also recovering from an serious ankle injury. Now 2017 is all about understanding the new bike and the Frenchman sees this year as a work in progress.

Guintoli is unsure of how competitive he will be as the GSX-R1000R is all-new, but he will soon find out next week when he takes to the Donington Park track - a circuit he knows well.

“We have established that the road bike is a very strong package and a very good base to work with. We have a lot of work to make it suit the BSB rules and improve the efficiency,” said Guintoli, speaking to bikesportnews.com at the track.

“We have got to pull all the pieces together. Mainly the electronics is very different and we have to make the bike efficient with the package. It is still interesting to go out and do some work because most likely we are going to encounter these conditions. We are learning all the time and hopefully we can be competitive very soon.

“We are also learning about the chassis and we still haven’t tried many things that are available. We haven’t got a very good understanding yet of the package but step-by-step we are gaining understanding of how this bike works. But because it is such a new concept in the way it is designed there is no reference for us to be looking at, and we have to build on the foundations."
