Donington BSB test: O'Halloran focuses on ride-by-wire

Honda Racing’s Jason O’Halloran did not complete many laps during the MCE British Superbike test at Donington Park, but did use the sessions to develop the new ride-by-wire system on the 2017 Fireblade.

After the test in Spain earlier this month the Australian rider has improved the initial touch on the throttle, and now is focusing on the rev range, particularly in wet conditions.

O’Halloran has never used a ride-by-wire system before and had always been on cables, so he is continuing to adapt to the new changes on the CBR1000RR. But the team are making ‘steady progress’ which is pleasing for the BSB rider.

“It was cold and wet and I was basically going out and in and it was a strange day and it was really cold and miserable out there. We just used the time for the throttle connection and the fly by wire system that we have got. We are making steady progress and we seem to get one area right and then change another area,” said O’Halloran, speaking to bikesportnews.com.

“In Spain it was the initial touch on the throttle that we struggled with and I think we have got that a lot better. Now we need to work on the second half of the rev range. It is a little bit too peaky at the minute and especially in the wet condtiions and we have wheel spin.

“We need to make the bike smooth and ride-able and bring the speed and power back into it. But everything is good. I have never used a fly by wire system before as I have always been on cables, and it is a different feel. But we are getting there and now it is working on other areas.”
