Donington WSBK: Front row for Stapleford as Sofuoglu bags Supersport pole

Kawasaki Puccetti’s Kenan Sofuoglu will start the World Supersport race from pole position at Donington Park, after a strong performance during the qualifying sessions.

The reigning British Supersport champion, Luke Stapleford held on to make in on to the front row for the race at his home track, with a solid 1’30.677, and was only four tenths slower than the Kawasaki of the Turkish rider.

But Stapleford was a fraction off the time set by former MCE British Superbike rider, PJ Jacobsen with the American clocking a 1’30.522 which placed him on the front row for the third time this season. Meanwhile Sofuoglu was unable to better his outright lap record that he set last year at track and lapped a 1’30.298 this afternoon.

Alex Baldolini, Randy Krummenacher and Ayrton Badovini all made up row two, with English rider’s, GRT Racing’s Gino Rea and CIA Landlord Insurance Honda’s Kyle Smith just missing out, and had to settle for P7 and P8 respectively. It was not a completely British line-up, as the pair are joined on row three by MV Agusta Reparto Corse’s Lorenzo Zanetti.

In Superpole one a last lap dash pushed Alex Baldolini and Alessandro Zaccone into the top two fastest times, and their super quick laps pushed Cluzel down to third in the session and out of contention for a spot in Superpole two.

The other Brits had a steady qualifying session too. Wildcard rider and MCE British Supersport regular, Andrew Irwin will start the race in seventeenth on the grid, meanwhile Kyle Ryde will begin in 26th place, with Stefan Hill in P23.
